The 2009 conference focused on the role of the senses in word and image, exploring issues related to how words and images can represent sensory perception, and how they can stand in for a missing sense. The combination or words and images in this regard is a particularly fruitful relationship, creating analogies for perceptual experience that represent or imply shade, texture, light, sound, even taste and smell through some other sensory channel.
